FDA approves new treatment for HFrEF

In early May, the U.S. FDA approved Farxiga (dapagliflozin) oral tablets for adults with heart failure with reduced ejection fraction to reduce the risk of cardiovascular death and hospitalization for heart failure. In a released statement, the FDA noted that with the approval, Farxiga is "the first in this particular drug class, sodium-glucose co-transporter 2 (SGLT2) inhibitors, to be approved to treat adults with New York Heart Association’s functional class II-IV heart failure with reduced ejection fraction."

Research Links Obesity to Increased Risk of COVID-19 Severity

New research completed by research data out of Shenzen, China and published in Diabetes Care demonstrates that obese patients may have increased odds of progressing to severe COVID-19. The studies researchers advised clinicians to pay "close attention to obese patients" during this time as they should be carefully managed.
